How to Read Your Flower Tag

Flower Tag for the Marigold Marvel Yellow

Flower Tag for the Marigold Marvel Yellow

Remember all those little plant tags we tossed away last year? It turns out that they contain some pretty important information!

Even for the most experienced gardener, I am always surprised by the new information I discover on the plant tags as new varieties are introduced. For example, let’s look at the newer variety of Sunpatiens. At first glance, this plant looks very similar to Impatiens, a shade loving plant. The Sunpatien is a newer variety that thrives in sunny areas of your yard, information that is displayed proudly on the back of the plant tag.

The plant tag will often include the name of your plant (especially important to keep if you are planning to get the same flower next year), light requirements, watering requirements, size and shape that the plant will grow, and special information about how certain creatures interact with a specific plant.

Light Requirements:

  • Full Sun - This type of plant should get at least six hours of sun or the hot afternoon sun.

  • Part Sun - This type of plant should get about three hours of direct sunlight and are best for areas where they will get the Morning Sun and/or Evening Sun.

  • Full Shade - These plants are often too delicate to be able to withstand the harsh heat of the afternoon. They will do best in areas that are cooler and have more indirect light, like under trees, or beside your home. These plants should get less than three hours of direct sun, if any.

Size and Shape:

Make sure to check your tag to see how high and wide your plant will grow. There are three main types of shapes to look out for:

  1. Mounding

  2. Trailing

  3. Straight Up

Plant Tags will also describe good maintenance habits. From when to water your plant, to how to prune or deadhead your plant. Be sure to double check what fertilizer will work best and if your plants are better suited for pots or your flower bed.
